Anyone here ever spend any time in ketosis? I just spent 5 days in it and holy crap, that is some wild shit. Talk about messing with your head, but damn the fat is coming off like crazy. Very simple, but difficult.

I've done intermittent fasting, paleo, and other stuff but keto is by far the most difficult.

Fast facts on ketosis

  • Ketosis occurs when the body does not have sufficient access to its primary fuel source, glucose.
  • Ketosis describes a condition where fat stores are broken down to produce energy, which also produces ketones, a type of acid.
  • As ketone levels rise, the acidity of the blood also increases, leading to ketoacidosis, a serious condition that can prove fatal.
  • People with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop ketoacidosis, for which emergency medical treatment is required to avoid or treat diabetic coma.
  • Some people follow a ketogenic (low-carb) diet to try to lose weight by forcing the body to burn fat stores.

Ketosis: What is ketosis?

Yeah. It's no joke. However, it's a fairly miraculous system of the human body. We're basically either in a state where we're burning carbohydrates for fuel, or fat for fuel. Switching into ketosis is natures way to switch to burning 100% fat for fuel. It's literally like the body flicks a switch "Ok, now we're gonna burn this stubborn fat for energy full time now." It's definitely been controversial for a long time, but it does work. However, it's not sustainable and can only be done for a short time.

You also have to know exactly what you're doing when you come out of ketosis. Gotta get a really good handle on carbohydrate sources, and reintroduce them at a slow rate as you gradually build up your intake again.

Ketosis can be dangerous and is highly unnecessary. The key to losing weight is simple: burn more calories than you consume.

There is nothing wrong with consuming carbs (even in large amounts). The problem is when you don't use the energy it gives you and they turn into fat.

There isn't anything "dangerous" about ketosis. It's literally the way our bodies work. In paleolithic times, paleo man would've gone for extended periods of time without any carbohydrate sources, and would've relied on their own stored fat for energy. There wasn't any domesticated fruits or veggies back then, they were all wild and seasonal and generally unavailable in harsh winters. It's how our bodies are designed, this is millions of years of evolution at work here.

Losing weight is actually slightly more complicated that simply burning more calories than you consume. It's about what you eat more than anything, and controlling carbohydrate intake. We Americans eat far, FAR too many carbohydrates -- mostly the bad kind. There isn't necessarily anything "wrong" with that, other than we are one of the fattest countries in the world with an obesity epidemic spiraling out of control.

By the way -- I'm in keto right now. It's getting easier. I also eat 5 times per day while remaining in ketosis.

How to lose weight-

Step 1- buy a bike
Step 2- ride the bike

Worst advice ever. I love cycling, but it sucks for burning fat. It's virtually all done through diet and increasing lean body mass (lifting weights.)

I ride everyday, and I'd never consider something as lame as ketosis. Exercise your fat ass.

lol, dude I'm working through the last 15-20 pounds of stubborn fat. I workout 6 days a week and have been for months. 4 days in the gym along with cardio every day except Sunday. This is just to break a plateau you know-nothing ****.

Ok, I'm a know nothing ****, and you're a fat ****. Kewl. You'll put that weight back on, I guarantee it. It'll start around Halloween when you start power munching the mini snickers. Then Thanksgiving will roll around and you'll stuff your face with gravy, mash potatoes and pumpkin pie. Christmas will be a week long feeding fest. By the time the Super Bowl rolls around you'll be fatter than ever and probably be sweating in your sleep again. Enjoy!

B+ trolling. Bit too wordy.

If you're starving your body of the nutrients it needs on a daily basis, then yes it can be dangerous.

In paleolithic times people also wiped their asses with leaves, died in their 30's and drank where they pooped.

Losing weight is simple (but not easy): burn more than you take in. You might need to lose weight, but I'm 6'2, 187 lbs, my body fat is low (I haven't measured in a while)...I used to weight 291 lbs and people who go on fad diets constantly ask me how I did it...it's simple. I count calories, I cut back on processed foods, I measure how much water I drink a day in order to make sure I'm hydrated...and I eat A LOT. But I work out everyday (lifting and doing cardio), only junk junk food/fast food whatever a maximum of once a week (not one day-but one meal). I order water instead of soda at restaurant, I don't smother my salad in dressing, and I eat tons of pasta (complex carb because I eat whole wheat)....but I burn off all of the energy that the pasta gives me.

Losing weight really is that simple: exercise, eat healthier (understand what healthy eating even is), stay hydrated, count calories (if necessary). That's it.

It has to be a lifestyle change, not a temporary diet. I've kept the weight off for 12 years now and will never go to that again.

edit: Sure my BMI is in the "normal" range (barely), but that's just because muscle weights more than fat.

If you're working out, your body is burning off fat AND protein if you're in ketosis. Burning through your glycogen and then going to fat is much more efficient.

Nope. Not if you're lifting weights.

Burning through your glycogen and then going to fat is much more efficient.

That's exactly what ketosis is dumbass.

By attention to the "and then" part...dumbass. If you have to burn through your glycogen reserves while working out it means that you weren't in ketosis before you started to work out.

Being in ketosis while working out is ok, but being in ketosis 24/7 isn't healthy for your body. It's why after working out you should have a meal to replenish your body.

But you're right, you know what you're talking about...maybe it's not the 20 lbs of fat that you can't lose that's stubborn-maybe-just maybe-it's you.
