So as Americans still pledge allegiance, they're obviously subjects.

So the question is, are Americans subjects of the US flag, their government, or their president?

The members of government and their President are "civil servants" - employees of the People. Citizens aren't subjects to anyone or anything, other than the rule of law.

Republicans keep referring to those in government as the "elites" which is the antithesis of everything contained in your Constitution.

Trump hates that, and that civil servants take an oath to uphold the Constitution, not a loyalty oath to him.

ETA: A flag is a piece of cloth and didn't even exist when the nation was founded. It's meaningless if you aren't prepared to uphold the Constitution and the values of liberty, equality and justice for which it stands.
