Acting is the art of PRETENDING that you are a fictitious person (or a historical person being portrayed), other than yourself. No one believes that you are really the character your are portraying.
But it appears that Academe does not understand the concept.
Heaven help any actor who portrays any one of the various demographic groups seeking victimhood status in our society.
Parts are often re-written to facilitate the presentation of a Black person in a part that was written for a caucasian (Hamilton?), but fuck every white person who repays the favor.
Believe it or not, some people actually pay good money to have their children indoctrinated into this insidious subculture of Academe.
Marlon Brando, a white mid-westerner of mixed ancestry, played the Italian immigrant, Vito Corleone, in the Godfather. Nobody thought he was actually presenting himself as an Italian-American. Linda Hunt plays a Chinese-Australian man with dwarfism in the Year of Living Dangerously. Guess what: Viewers knew that she was actually a short American woman doing a great job of acting. Lou Diamond Phillips, a Phillipino-American actor, has played Italians, Cubans, Mexicans, Native Americans, and any other olive skinned ethnicity you can imagine. Its called "acting."
