What is a sock?

I have always been under the impression that 'sock' had one definition:

An active poster who creates an additional profile, therefore having two active usernames.


But I see people being called a 'sock' when they really mean a 're-tread' (someone who was banned, but has managed to re-enter the board under a new username).


Clarification, anyone?

Same person...different name. Active or banned, its the same person...just a different name. Or in some cases.... different IP and machine... new fingerprints.
