According to new Department of Education data, that's how much tuition public colleges collected from undergraduates in 2012 across the entire United States. And I'm not being facetious with the word mere, either. The New America Foundationsays that the federal government spent a whole $69 billion in 2013 on its hodgepodge of financial aid programs, such as Pell Grants for low-income students, tax breaks, work study funding. And that doesn't even include loans.
If we were we scrapping our current system and starting from scratch, Washington could make public college tuition free with the money it sets aside its scattershot attempts to make college affordable today.
That's not how it works, that's not how ANY of this works.
Completely unrelated policies cannot be traded that way.

I'm sure you will have no problem getting Democrats to sign up for more spending and more taxes today too, by for example getting rid of some tax-cuts for free college.
But undoing ACA and making 20 million people lose insurance? for Free College? Will NEVER EVER even remotely happen. Democrats will get crucified for undoing ACA and Republicans will get smashed by their base in the primaries for unleashing unbearable socialism on the USA.
And the the thing is Republicans DO NOT NEED Democrats to repeal ACA. They can crash it tomorrow with simple majority if they wanted to.

Free education is what made the United States the most successful country in the world. You had the BEST public education system in the world, and Republicans destroyed it.
You starved the system of cash so that poor kids get such a substandard level of education they have little hope of getting out of poverty. You pay your teachers so poorly, they can barely survive on teacher's wages, and good people can ill afford to pay back student loans and provide for their families, so the best people can't really afford to go into the profession.
But the best of it is you blame teachers for turning our "liberals". The history of the world is liberals pushing change, and overcoming conservative resistance. Republican states set the cirriculum and what's being taught, but citizens blame teachers unions for the problem.

Your educations system while really good, would not work here.Here education system is free and public. Some schools are ruled by the State, other established by the State and ruled by private people (they have a permission from the State) and other schools are totally private but they also have permission from the State. You have to pay for the last ones. The other two are free. Speaking of Universities as far as I know they're all public, you don't have to pay (but some want to make new laws to allow private Universities)many developed nations have universal education for all its' citizens some of them even pay their students a basic income while they go to school in addition to free college.Free public college? 7 countries where college is free
the problem isn't that it doesn't work or isn't affodable or it isn't "worth the investment" its that America is an extremely racist country and they dont want blacks Hispanics naitve americans etc to be educated in the first place they want them to be dumb as rocks and have a class of educated wealthy white people in charge of them. The best way to ensure that is too abolish public schools which is a centuries long goal of the KKK and currently fought for goal in the republican party which has virtually become the political wing of the KKK. Just as they didn't want slaves to learn to read and write they dont want black and brown people today learning to either except they can't chop off their hands anymore like they used too.
For example, you have you have the High Schools for the gifted, that require high entrance exam scores, the same with the universities, they are also determined by the High School graduation exam. The higher the score, the better the university that one can go to.
Now dont get me wrong, I think its a really great way to do it, those that study hardest are the ones that are being "groomed" for positions that will benefit your society the most. The more potential benefit from a student, the more money spent nurturing their education. As it should be.
Here in the U.S it wont work. We would not be able to place students in Universities, or Colleges based on their score and desire to learn. It might start out that way, but in the end it would be determined that we have too many whites being sent to the schools that are regarded as more prestigious. So what would happen is that entrance would be based on grades, but we would also have to include race, economic standing of the family etc...
We would end up having some students with outstanding exam grades denied access to a school that they qualified for, so that someone with lower exam grades but the right ethnic background could take the place.
If we did it the exact same way that you did, placement by grades would end up being considered racist, using the test scores only would be considered racist and would only be used in order to disenfranchise a certain racial group.
In reality there could be no placement exam, it would be based on minority status.
They way its done where you are is great, it makes sure the brightest minds are the one that be given the best options and your countries literacy level will be higher,
The U.S would be based on the amount of melatonin you have in your skin and because of that the brightest minds will not be the ones nurtured, our countries literacy level will end up being lower.
