In the Old Days, if your house caught fire, people might show up and offer to put it out for you - for a fee. If you didn't have enough cash on hand, they might offer to buy the house instead - but only at a price that reflected it's condition (that is, that it was on fire). That's supposedly where the phrase comes from.

One problem wthat systems like that is that fires that could have been extinguished, spread to the neighbors' houses instead.

True. He lived in the County, so he didn't pay City taxes. Since he didn't pay taxes, he had to pay a fee, if he wanted service. That's the model all for-profit firefighters follow, right? No fee, no service?

True. He lived in the County, so he didn't pay City taxes. Since he didn't pay taxes, he had to pay a fee, if he wanted service. That's the model all for-profit firefighters follow, right? No fee, no service?

No, you see private fire departments would be looking to make a profit. They're not just going to refuse to put out a fire because the person hasn't paid. The fire department I provided a link to has a policy that says they'll put out your fire if you haven't paid your fee, but you naturally have to pay more than the fee would have been. Since that was a government run fire department they were able to just sit there and watch the man's home go up in flames because they have no profit motive as they're run on taxes.

Lincoln proposed an income tax to pay for the war against the confederacy. Yeah, you actually have to pay for wars. That's something modern day Republicans do not understand.

Lincoln stole from the populace and inflated their currency to pay for an unnecessary war that he had no business waging.

A war he had no business waging? So you think he should have just let the southern states succeed from the union? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
