The job has never paid well, has never really garnered much in terms of status. People used to do it because we felt we were doing some good. Bad apples? Sure.

But now my fellow conservatives have made it out that most apples are bad. So now--still with little pay and little reward--teachers are leaving the profession in droves and not going into it.

One of my grandmothers was a school teacher, so were two of her daughters. House full of great books, which weren't cheap back then.

A full plate lunch cost like 10 cents or so, a half pint of milk in those nearly indestructible glass bottles was a nickel, I think.

I don't think that is what he meant, but schools never had to do much re 'anger management'; parents used to be all about that and backed teachers to the hilt. Fewer 'problem children' to disrupt classes. Kids with issues were quarantined or booted out and parents had to deal with them..
