That and the moon landing are colossal wastes of money, meant to distract people from the fact that we've barely scratched the surface of the Earth's resources. It'l happen eventually but whats the rush? I still think its a good idea but not sending humans. The key will be robotics and A.I.

If it happens through private funding I think it would be ok. I'm not sure though if elon musks timeline is realistic though .

Going to Mars is a fantastically difficult and expensive proposition that will require a vast international commitment.
Before any true Mars mission can take place, we will need a functioning base on the Moon, then mars rockets can be launched from there.

Planet Earth is in no way together enough for such a task yet. Try back again in another 50 years.
