What did you want to be when you grew up?

In the recesses of your mind
When you were younger and had flights of fancies running in your head about being something when you grew up.......what was it? Astronaut? Doctor? Lawyer? Actor? Singer?

Did you ever make your dream of being what you wanted, come true?

I wanted to talk like the man on the 6 o'clock news...

When I was in school I ran with a kid down the street

And I watched him burn himself up on bourbon and speed
But I was smarter than most, and I could choose
Learned to talk like the man on the six o'clock news
When I was eighteen, Lord, I hit the road
But it really doesn't matter how far I go

My first serious interest began at about 5 with the study of medicine and physiology. Then by 12, it shifted to astronomy and space science, but by 18, I realized I didn't want to be stuck in a very limited field working for a liberal university begging for grants all the time, I wanted to make money and have opportunities, so I switched to electrical and electronic engineering, but also pursued a few side interests running my own S-Corps.

Pro golfer. I tried really hard and got a job at a golf course. I practiced or played almost every day except in winter. I made a community college team where I made first team all conference, but that was about it. I was not near good enough to try for the PGA. So I bagged that dream and went to college which was the right move.

At one time I wanted to be a fireman. My Dad was a fireman with our local department, as was my older brother eventually. But when I was really young (like, single-digits young) I didn't understand that "volunteer" meant that Dad didn't get paid, so that was out as a career choice.

I wanted to race cars and, actually, I have an Uncle who, at age 86, still drives today. He's had his own team for decades. Nowadays, though, his laps are usually turned at VIR on his birthday; one lap for every year. It was only late into his career when he brought on co-drivers. He was in his 50's and I was already in the Navy by then.

When I was little I knew a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and thought, for a while, anyway, about joining the Coast Guard and doing that.

Oh, and of course I wanted to be a cowboy or a rock star...

Well done.

I wanted to be a mercenary. I wrote an essay for 5th grade on what I wanted to be when I grew up. Naturally my 1950something teacher was horrified. I was firmly told that girls cannot be mercenaries. I had to write a new essay perhaps on being married to a mercenary or adventurer. My new essay was how I married a mercenary, killed him and took his place as a world famous assassin. Needless to say, she was not happy with that either.

I wanted to be retired. I actually said this. I was like, they give you money for doing nothing, that's freaking AMAZING.

When I was in the 1st grade, on the Cowboy John show, Cowboy John asked me what I learned in school. I told him I could already count and say my ABCs so now all I needed to do was learn about the cave men and the dinosaurs.

All I cared about was being financially independent.

I didn't care what profession I had as long as I could use it to get there. I did know that I would have to work for myself though

I have always absolutely loved animals. And for the longest time I wanted to be like Dr. Doolittle, I wanted to give my life to helping all animals and become a veterinarian.

When I got older, I did some research on becoming a vet, and found out how long I'd have to stay in school to become a vet. As I despised school, the extra 15 years of college was a huge negative for me at that time.

I thought of going into astronomy or becoming a chef. The lesser of all school evils was becoming a certified chef, so I chose that. Unfortunately, the college kept "losing" my application packet, which was $50. They ended up "losing" it three times before they finally "found" it. This fuktardedness on the colleges part ate up the money I needed to buy the books for the course, which I didn't have, because I was using what little savings I had that I managed to get while mowing lawns in high school. And now that was all gone. So I had no way to buy books and no money for gas to get back and forth TO school.

A few years later I decided to try again and after working a job for a few years, applied at a junior college for some basic "one at a time" classes. I thought I'd take something office related, like typing and bookkeeping.
But, furthering myself was just not in the cards for me. My car engine burned up on the way to school one day.....and that was it.

Had to literally walk 5 miles each way to and from work for three years before I had money to buy another car.
By then, I had just given up. Now I just work office jobs. I like the work, but they don't pay shit.

Kick myself every day for not pushing myself to go to vet school.

Agriculture scientist= Like George Washington Carver. Feed The world! End starvation.
I did work in agriculture for a few years at the laborer level. I never made it into college. Spent the rest of my adult life in residential construction and property maintenance. I do have certifications in soil erosion control and landscaping construction, horticulture.

Of your choices, I most admire the chef path. I love feeding people foods crafted with good ingredients and love.

Depending on what age. I'm pretty sure I did become a fairy-ballerina-gypsy-gun slinging-chef-writer-baton-twirling-private-detective-composer-time-lord....

Can't you tell?
