I remember when I was young and worked in retail we would stop and detain shoplifters until the police arrived. I assumed this was still common practice.

Here in Santa Barbara the High School kids are going to Sprouts for lunch. 20-30 at a time and stealing (mostly) the sushi. The kids hear that it happens all over w/o consequence... mostly because media pushes these stories.
