One thing I found fascinating were the accounts of people who were involved in the Jan. 6 riot that had come to recognize it as a mistake. The way they spoke about what made them decide to go to DC and participate can't accurately be described as anything other than it being cult-like. I understand it's a loaded term invoking a visceral reaction from trumples but nothing else captures the state of mind they were in at the time. The parallels to other people who were involved in a cult and subsequently left are stunning. It's as thought they experience a temporary loss of touch with the real world.

They exist in an informational universe that is now completely separate and self-sustaining. And going back to the OP, that closed circuit has put them in such a state that they feel revenge is the only response. The worse the better. A person has to feel personally victimized to get to that point.

This moment is like a revenge movie. The hero victim suffers years of brutal physical and psychological torture in the basement of some shabby house at the hands of some demented sicko. He finally escapes and comes back to take revenge by doing all the same things to the sicko that had been done to him. Starring Christian Bale as the hero and Ralph Fiennes as the sicko.

I'm just trying to figure out how MAGA people were so terribly tortured.

I certainly get Trump's motivations. In his mind, he's never done anything wrong, and anyone who holds him accountable for anything is mean and nasty and must pay the price. That's just standard psychosis and immature narcissism.

But the joy the MAGA people get from this revenge and carnage is different. It appears that, in their minds, they've been brutally tortured for a long time and are taking great pleasure in watching their captors suffer, convinced that the world is being cleansed while it's all burning down around them. This isn't about fairness or justice. What is this?

I know there will be the standard personal insults and attacks and deflection here, and that's fine, but I wonder if anyone has a theory.

The transformation happens gradually, IMO. My friend became attached to GOP politics largely over the tax issue. Then he began to consume right wing media and slowly became radicalized. The Limbaugh phenomenon if you will.

I think now it's become a matter of being unwilling and or unable to admit a mistake.

The accountant friend I mentioned, I know why he feels slighted. He's been financially successful and resents having to pay taxes according to his income. He sees people who have not had his degree of success as lazy, undeserving beneficiaries of the taxes he pays.

But, he's not really MAGA. The base of MAGA was the "poorly educated", the working class.

but it you want to ask a question about a group, you don't try to build the answer based on a member of the group that is exceptional. you look for the most TYPICAL member of the group, to learn about the GROUP.

Yeah, that's what I learned in 2016, when I realized America isn't what I thought it was. He likes hurting people. I didn't realize they did, too. It does explain a lot. A person has to be terribly aggrieved to be like that.
