My company has a small reefer division they offer 5cpm more for the suckers that want to take it. Very few people are doing it. It's just not worth it. You have to sleep with a damn reefer on your back 24/7 and you sit all the time. The reefer people make the same money as the dry van without all the detention time. I'll get some that are really really long wait times but reefer realistically has to wait for 4-5 hours EVERY single time. **** that. Very few if any drop and hook for reefer. And you have to be alert to the damn reefer going out in the middle of the night while you sleep. Again, **** that shit.

For O/O, reefer pays very well.

Dry van, not so much.

I flatbed most of the year.

I'm looking at the board right now.

They're offering me about 25 loads within 200 miles of the house.

They give me the pay at my rates, which is 75% of 99%... so these numbers are what I'll actual make after their cut.

The highest paying loads pay $3.75 a mile and the lowest pays $2.26. Three bucks is about the average.

The company pays my insurance, baseplates, permits and highway use tax.

They also subsidize my fuel. The pump price at the J today is $3.55. I pay $2.91. Divide by 6 for fuel price per mile. 50¢ per mile.

So a buck a mile will cover my expenses give or take.

If I take that $3.75 load, I'll put $2.75 a mile in my pocket. Might be an additional 10-12 com to cover taxes, depending on how much I made this year.

Be a little less with the deadhead.

Trucks can run studded tires, but we ordinary chain up. But there is a semi-recent development called "auto-socks". I don't think they'll last long, but just for going up and down an icy hill, some guys swear by 'em.

Cooper makes a fantastic stud. Tungsten steel and with a special tread and rubber compound. I can drive anywhere with them unless the snow is just so deep, I'm pushing it with the bumper.

My dad always told me they had the ultimate snow tire when he was young made of some rubber compound that had ground up sawdust mixed in the rubber. I guess the sawdust absorbed moisture then refroze sticking to the road giving positive traction, but he said they disappeared off the market because the rubber wore out fast.

Those auto socks look like a similar idea--- they absorb moisture from the snow and ice then it freezes sticking the sock to the road, but like you said, at the expense of wearing out fast.
