There has been a months-long boycott of Target, led by by activists, as a result of Target failing to yield to their demands. These demands included not only a continuation of DEI policies that favor minorities over whites in hiring and promotions, but also:
  • give $250 million to black-owned banks
  • adopt six black colleges (HBCUs) to provide opportunities for black students
  • invest $2 billion in black-owned businesses by favoring them over white-owned for shelf space

Questions:

1. is it racist to prioritize blacks over whites in such a way?

2. Was the price of a boycott worth it, since tens of thousands of people - including minorities - lost their job as a result of falling sales?

Caveat emptor. They can do what they like when they like WITH THEIR OWN MONEY!!

If Target REDUCES their margins and makes items CHEAPER there will be a new equilibrium.

That’s not all that’s happened. Almost 2,000 hard-working staff has been laid off. Was that worth it?

Admittedly I don't go to our Target very often but unless it's gotten really low-rent I can't say that I've ever seen a black person inside. :dunno:

Then again our Costco does not look like a third-world venue either.....More like a Boomer exercise yard. ;)

Their Extortion violates many laws, and falls into the racketeering laws like BLM was doing to businesses, acting like mobsters threatening businesses to extort from them.
They were asking Target to violate Equal Employment Opportunity Laws, and it's principles of equal employment opportunities for all.
Basically asking them to be breaking discrimination in employment laws that was set up to protect them in the first place.

Can you imagine the squealing if there was a "ban" on Companies with DEI hire policies by WHITES!!!!

Greg

Thus far, the boycott has cost almost 2,000 Target employees their jobs.

I think you are totally overestimating the effect of the boycott. Walmart has just been more effective recently in attracting foot traffic to their stores and Target seems to be falling behind in the grocery business that really attracts people to come into their stores.

And the sad thing is, you will find if you dig deep enough that Target WAS in the process of complying with their demands to discriminate against whites, and were well on their way to investing $2 billion in black-owned companies and had “adopted” 20 colleges to help black students.

Apparently, it wasn’t at an acceptable pace for the extortionists.

Walmart has a very large contingency of EBT shoppers, much more so than Target. That accounts for a very substantial percentage of their sales.

Not sure where you live, but here in the DC area there are tons of blacks shopping at Target. (Or there were, before the boycott.)

If Blacks decided they didn't want to shop there that's their right.

Nothing to do with "worth it", Lisa. All to do with people spending their money where they like. Now if the goons INTIMIDATE people who are going about their daily business then that's a different issue.

The extortionists would never be happy with whatever Target did.

The annual cost for 2,000 minimum wage jobs in the U.S. is approximately $49.4 million, calculated by multiplying the 2,000 jobs by the federal minimum wage of $$7.25 per hour, assuming a standard 40-hour work week for 52 weeks a year. However, the total cost would be higher once other expenses like taxes and benefits are included, and this figure can change depending on state and local minimum wages, which are often higher than the federal minimum. (AI)

Seems pretty dumb to spend $4B when it only costs $50mpa to pay those same workers. Use that $4B to pay those workers for 80 years!!

Except it’s a reasoanble question to ask boycotters who hurt a business to the point that 2,000 innocent people lost their jobs whether the harm to them is worth it.

But the boycott wasn’t about paying workers more. It was about demanding that Target choose black-owned businesses over whites, which of course hurt white businesses.

A lot of people paid the price for these activitists demanding Target continue racist policies.

It seems Target made promises that they are now walking back. I don't know why Target originally agreed by it seems a boycott is a reasonable reaction to broken promises.

Why would you buy your groceries at Target...

Why would you buy your groceries at Target...

Probably wouldn't, that's why they are declining in relation to Walmart. Target seems to be deemphasizing their grocery experience which cause a decrease in foot traffic.
