The Virginia legislature, like most states, is a part time job. The Democratic majority just raised their salaries from $18,000 per year to $50,000 per year, amounting to a 278% increase for themselves. The Republicans voted against the increase. That also does not include other perks they already receive.

The Democrat controlled Virginia Senate and House of Delegates have both passed their versions of the commonwealth's budget, largely along party lines.

The Senate version of the budget, which passed Thursday, now includes an amendment to increase the salaries of state senators and delegates to $50,000 annually. The House version also includes this pay increase.

Currently, senators make $18,000 a year and delegates make $17,640.

Additionally, while in session, legislators receive a $237 per diem. When not in session, they receive a mileage reimbursement of 67 cents per mile to attend meetings, $300 if they attend a meeting (increasing to $400 if they attend two meetings in a day) and $1,250 per month to help maintain an office in their district, according to the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Commission.

The two legislative houses will have to reconcile their dueling budgets before a final spending bill can head to the governor's desk.

The base salary for Virginia legislators has not been increased since 1988 (nearly 40 years).

How many Virginians get paid $50,000 plus per diems and additional perks a year for a part time job?

Furthermore, they recently introduced dozens of pieces of legislation for tax increases for almost every walk of life.

The Republicans in Virginia have been messing up the state for years. That's why they got voted out.

The Democrat Party - a conspiracy to steal from the American Taxpayer

Your deep red part-timers in the state of Alabama, $52,000. I killed your thread buddy. Give it a proper burial.

The Virginia govt. last raise for their congressman and senators was in 1988 for $18,000, which in today's dollars equivalent purchasing power is $49, 850.

And? If you are serving for the money then you are serving for the wrong reason.

IMHO no congressional politician, state or federal, should make but a dollar a year. A reasonable stipend for expenses/mileage I could see.

In Virginia's case no politician serving in Richmond is much more then three hours away from their homes in any direction. Most could easily commute.

So what? How is that relevant to Virginia? If they felt it was time to raise the compensation, that's fine. I don't disagree that $18,000 may be low, but a 278% increase doesn't exactly demonstrate that they understand the plight of the working class they claim to be supporting, particularly after introducing dozens of tax increases on the working public paying for this.

If you think acting like a pigeon shitting all over a Checkers board and then strutting around like you won makes you feel like you "killed my thread" don't let me stop you. I'm glad something so unimportant and insignificant can fulfill your day.

For a part time job, plus additional per diems and perks. I have no issue with them raising the salary, but a 278% increase is poor optics, especially considering they just introduced dozens of new taxes on the working public paying for this. They could have done a small and gradual increase over years to catch up.

It is a lot for a part time job! Especially with their other per diem perks. But as far as buying power, $18,000 in1988 was a damn good salary for part time back then too!

Seriously, $18k that's a joke. No wonder only a bunch of retards apply for the job. I have no problem with the increase, long overdue and could be in the best interests of Virginians.

Members of the New Hampshire General Court (the state legislature) are paid extremely little compared with other states.

Base pay

  • $200 per two-year term (about $100 per year) for rank-and-file members.
  • Presiding officers (House Speaker and Senate President) receive $250 per term.

This pay level is set in the state constitution and dates back to 1889, making it the lowest legislative salary in the United States.

Mileage & limited extra compensation

  • Legislators receive mileage reimbursement for travel to legislative sessions.
  • In a special session, they may receive $3 per day (up to 15 days) plus mileage.
  • They do not receive a daily per diem for living expenses.

Context

  • Because of the minimal pay, New Hampshire is known for having a “citizen legislature,” where members typically hold other jobs or are retired.
  • Efforts to raise pay or remove the constitutional cap are periodically debated but have not succeeded.

Bottom line: New Hampshire legislators are essentially volunteers, receiving about $100 per year plus mileage, far below typical state legislative salaries.
