Violent Crime Plummeting

Many of the largest police departments, like the NYPD and LAPD, are still missing.

Some large police departments began to report data to the FBI again in 2022, like the Miami-Dade Police Department. But the two largest police agencies in the U.S., the New York Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department, are still missing in the federal data.

A spokesperson from the LAPD said the department submitted crime data to the California Department of Justice using the old data collections system, but is still working on complying with the FBI’s new record standards. “The intent is to have it implemented by January 1, 2024 as part of the rollout of the new [Record Management] system,” the spokesperson said.

An NYPD spokesperson said the department is currently collecting crime data in compliance with the new system. “We anticipate that the agency will be NIBRS-certified in the very near future,” the spokesperson said, but didn’t offer a specific timeline.

Been over this, already a thread on it. Crime isn’t going down, crime reporting to the fbi is incomplete due to a new database. Like 40% of the police agencies are not reporting data to the fbi.

Also, it’s estimated that a bunch of crimes go unreported due to people of believing anything will ever be done about it.
My experience is that law enforcement never ever underplay crime figures.
They have too much to lose when they come for their annual budget,

Good stuff. Many of the factors that came to the fore during COVID are receding.

Violent crime fell in the first quarter of 2024 by more than 15%, continuing its postpandemic decline nationwide, according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Homicides and reported rapes both declined about 26% in the first three months of 2024 compared with a year earlier, data from the FBI’s quarterly uniform crime report showed. Robberies were down about 18% and aggravated assault fell by about 13%, the FBI said. Reported property crime declined about 15%.
The homicide rate continues to fall in big U.S. cities after skyrocketing during the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic. Police officials and criminologists have said the factors that contributed to an increase in violent confrontations in the early days of the pandemic are receding.
