Vegas murders motive, my guess

So it's been nearly a week and the police and media are unable to determine the motive for the murderous carnage.

I wondered about the ISIS claim, but with no sign of jihad, I too was stumped.

Then, this morning, I heard a story on an NPR station (I'm not finding a link) about a branch of radical jihadists in Catalonia, near Barcelona, Spain. The Imam encouraged followers to embrace a western lifestyle in order to blend in, including drinking alcohol and eating bacon. I got the impression of a more clandestine version of Islamic terrorism. Leave 'em baffled for Allah? They were thought to be responsible for attacks in Europe before their mosque was shut down.

This May, 2017 NPR article states outright that when ISIS claims responsibility for a connection to terrorism in the West, they're telling the truth: What Does It Mean When ISIS Claims Responsibility For An Attack?

My best guess with what I know at this point is he turn radical jihadist, inspired by the teachings of that Imam.
I would need to hear that he talked about Islam in the past but no one who knows him mentioned anything about Islam.

We know he was big about the 2nd amendment but we don't know what he was angry about. Who did he have a beef with?

He was also a gambler in vegas. The mafia is in vegas. My guess is his girlfriend and brother aren't telling us what or who he was mad at. It's impossible he didn't complain out loud to the girlfriend or express his anger.

I have a friend if he did something like this it wouldn't surprise me. But there's nothing you can do. Just because you think you know someone who's capable.

I just don't understand wanting to hurt other people. If it were isis or a racist that would make sense but this was neither. Bizarre

Deterring who? The pud that used the 2nd amendment to murder all those people in Las Vegas wasn't deterred by anything. Repeal the 2nd amendment. That is the solution.
Which does nothing about the fact he had a car full of explosive material. Seems the fact this guy could have taken out a city block doesn't concern sock puppets such as yourself or the media that tells you what to think.

he had something much bigger planned, with all that ammo and bomb making material....

who is he? (besides a monster?) a wanna be 007? an alien hybrid? :p

how could he rationally think he could get away from the scene?

Why did he think he needed all of those guns in his room when he only needed the two he used?

just nonsensical, all of it.... :(

Had Paddock been to Spain recently? Or did the Imam move to the states? I too am keeping the question of conversion in my mind, but he seemed such a loner and with no real social media presence, it's a little hard to imagine a long distance conversion.

Good point, I wasn't thinking directly influenced, but maybe he heard about the movement.

You'd think they'd find some sort of online presence. You'd have to go to great lengths to mask it.

I'm still not anywhere near sure, but it struck me as a possibility when I heard the story about the mosque in Spain.
I'm the same age as Paddock--give or take a couple years--and you would find only USMB and my work email if you were investigating me. I don't even have a cell phone. Maybe he wasn't masking anything--he just didn't use it.
The conversion story makes as much sense as anything else, but I'm afraid that anyone who knows what was going on with him is going to be afraid to speak up. They would be blamed for not saying something, wouldn't they? Or suspected of being an accomplice?

He was uber rich. Probably felt nothing could stop him, some sort of invincibility. Also, he had an escape plan, so, probably felt he could get away with it. Some sort of game. Obviously not there mentally, but, smart enough, but overly cocky to think he could actually get away with it.

When people resort to this for meaning in their life, it's basically the last resort.
Clearly, he did not have family and friends or any true close relationships

A psych guy on the news a couple nights ago explained that some psychopaths get a huge rush from the power of taking a life. They LOVE that feeling and seek it out. Now this guy doesn't seem to have been a serial killer, but who knows what stuff he was playing at prior to the shooting that got him on that track. Possibly.

I would never put my life on Facebook. Call me shy, reserved, whatever you like. I don't need Twitter--I can cuss out people here for free without a phone.

i have a cell phone but it sits on the kitchen table as a land line or if i Travel i take it for the ability to call triple 'A' while on the road and thats it .

there is a much darker side to him that is coming out....a cafe at one of his frequented casinos manager said he treated his girlfriend like crap in front of them, even implied he was paying her to be with him... in front of waiters and mgr....

the $100k he sent to her, wasn't out of love as I thought initially...at least it doesn't appear to be after hearing how he treated her in public....?

was he just using her the past year as a companion so he appeared more normal at the places he was scoping out for his massacres? the casinos with concerts nearby, the cruise ships he was scoping out???

He just took money and bought legal off the shelf products & used them to kill as they were designed. Doesn't take any brains to do that. Likely loved power & control.

I've always dreaded a terrorist strike on a cruise ship--sitting ducks with nowhere to run and no help for hours. Their security must be pretty good, although it isn't obvious.

Nothing wrong with a landline, I say. And it works when the power is out.

before 9/11 when we cruised, they didn't check the luggage nor were there x-ray machines like at an airport.....but after 9/11 every thing tightened up...all kinds of security to prevent a terrorist event....and guns on board....but with the devious, I suppose, where there is a will.....there is a way....

The Achille Lauro was a good lesson for their industry.

Ha, it's amazing how this program format here will copy what you write sometimes, and then when you sometimes close out or change to another topic, come back, well whatta ya know there it is what you wrote still sitting there which is great, but I just wrote a post when all of a sudden the page went bonkers, changed up, and the work was gone. Couldn't find it if I tried. Good grief..
