I was watching a TV drama and one of the characters was in his dress blue USAF uniform. He had Staff Sergeant stripes on his arm.
But the U.S. pins on his lapels looked just what I have just typed, U.S. with no circle around it. I thought that enlisted ranks had circles around the U.S. and officers did not.
So I googled for images and found this, which confirmed that enlisted uniforms bear the U.S. inside a circle.

But I kept on looking, just for the heck of it, and found this image of an Air Force Chief Master Sergeant in the presence of his Commander-in-Chief, appearing to bear officer's U.S. insigina.

Can anyone explain this?
