The BLS takes a survey of 60,000 households, about 110,000 individuals, and there are questions asking why they have stopped looking if they have stated that they stopped looking for work. Answers range from no transportation, caring for a sick family member, given up, going to school, etc.

Citing the labor participation rate is not idiotic, it helps to paint the full unemployment picture. . The current "full picture" shows that in the real world, unemployment is still high- despite the 5.1% U-3 number.

We citizens need to demand the Government calculate unemployment in a realistic fashion. The way they do it now is really just a joke, an insult to anyone with a brain.

A few days ago the Federal Reserve Beige Book said The overall Labor supply continues to be "very tight", with contacts noting shortages of workers. Pay rates have grown by 3 percent to 20 percent, with the sharper increases reflecting a greater supply-demand gap.

And yet nearly 100 million people that used to be employed are no longer employed. And they did not retire.

Many of the 94 million are people who have never been employed, like students who just turned 16 years old or many stay at home moms.
And by far and away the biggest group of the 94 million ARE retirees, 39 million in fact as well as 11 million disabled.

So lets look at the numbers for the 94 million

39 million retirees

21 million college students

10.5 million stay at home moms

9 million high school students over 16

9 million disabled

2 million family caregivers

1 million stay at home dads
