Jeffrey Goldberg interviews Michael Oren, discussing how Israel's next government can repair the damage caused by Netanyahu and Ron Dermer.

"Goldberg: How are you going to shape different approaches to foreign policy as a member of Knesset?

Oren: Foreign affairs is viewed as the poorer, younger brother of security affairs in Israel. We don’t have long-term strategic thinking about foreign affairs. We should take it more seriously here. Israel has to undergo a fundamental change – we have to realize we are not alone in the world Our relationships, not just with the United States, but with the Far East, with Europe, with Africa, are vital for us. We haven’t looked in strategic ways about how to defend ourselves against BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions.) I understand why this happens – there is the old Zionist notion that it is not important what the non-Jews think, that it's only important what the Jews do. But we can’t function in the world with this attitude."

Old Zionist notions like colonization and ethnic cleansing won't function in this world either.

Jewish state or democratic state?

It was a huge blunder on the part of the treasonous Repubs as well.

Who knew that the US congress was now a stop on Netanyau's campaign trail?

Conservatives in both countries are threatened by a new direction that's arisen in the US since the 1970s. Many Americans born since that time are more willing to question the Zionist narrative that conservatives have exploited to justify Israel's slow-motion colonization of Palestine. Iran is seen by those conservatives as a useful distraction for those afraid to debate the racist basis of Israel's occupation of Palestine.

omg. some of you really believe you are the saviors of all mankind.

Why do you hate us and our allies and support terrorist countries instead?

blame arab states for creating the refugees and camps

where are the camps in Israel?
Who do you blame for al-Nakba?

"In the 1930s, Jewish land ownership had increased from approximately 1% to just over 6% of the land, and violence had increased as well. With the emergence of several Zionist terrorist gangs (whose ranks included a number of future Prime Ministers of Israel), there was violent conflict. Numerous people of all ethnicities were killed – then, as now, the large majority of them Christian and Muslim Palestinians."

Arabs and their own local leaders told them to leave. Arabs created the problem and have over the years compounded it.
Even the PA and G still have camps, Israel does not. palestinians are treated with contempt in the arab states, in Israel the arabs are citizens. Israel pays more and has more rights than even arabs in their own states do.
Syria has killed more palestinians that Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Israel combined.
So how are the Israelis/jews the GREAT bad guys since even before the Ottoman empire collapse?
Why have jews been persecuted by muslims since the dawn of Islam? Because they would not accept Mohammed as prophet or deny their own faith? In Islam there is supposed to be no compulsion of religion (Quran 2/256).

If muslims want to look for a bad guy they should look in the mirror and at their own leaders (political and religious)

Arabs didn't create the problem of Zionism; Jews did. There were ten times as many Arabs as Jews living in Palestine when the Zionist colonization began. By 1948 Jews had made it clear to Arabs they would no longer be a majority nation in Palestine.

Jaffa is good example of how Jews initiated the ethnic cleansing that brought their state into existence

Anti-semitism and persecution created the need for the zionist movement, but the Ottomans were inviting the jews to resettle and develop the ancient homeland 50 years before the zionist movement began.
Zionism was not the problem, the poor state and lack of income draining the ottoman empire was. Ignorance, fear of modernization, cultural stagnation, poverty, tribal pettiness and hate, internal religious conflict were all far more responsible. The problems were internal, not the zionism, it still is.

Neither the Arabs of Palestine nor the Ottoman Empire was responsible for European anti-Semitism. Jews stole Arab farms, businesses, and homes in Palestine because other Europeans treated them badly in their homelands? When did two wrongs make anything right?

Jews were invited to settle, buy land and develop a homeland by the Ottomans and arabs.
Local arab/palestinians were given the chance to register land and pay taxes. Even those who did own land, including some of Arafat's family, were more than willing to sell to the jews. Most of the PLO leaders also had family that sold off their land, hen they tried to declare the sales null and demanded the land back. None of them offered to return the money paid for the land.
Jews have been returning throughout history, when conditions were more favorable. The return in the 19th and 20th C was just more visible than most of the other aliyah.

Zionism was one symptom of the cancerous European colonization of the Middle East. When Napoleon invaded Egypt he called to Jews to "return" to their sacred homeland. Lords Balfour and Rothschild made the same plea over a century later. After WWII the US became the dominant imperial power in the Middle East, and the Zionists found a new master to serve. Through it all foreign powers have sought to use Jews to terrorize Arabs of the Middle East in furtherance of western colonial aims.

egyptian, greeks, persians, romans, turks have all conquered and crisscrossed the region. The arabs came as invaders and conquerors.
.......but you blame everyone else?
If the arabs had not take the holyland, none of this would be happening now.

Aris, it is quite obvious that Gaza George is not interested in the Arabs per se. If he was, he wouldn't just want to talk about putting down Israel, but would give us news about what is happening to the Arabs in the rest of the Middle East. So many tens of thousands have been killed by fellow Arabs; and since there are no Jews involved, Gaza George closes his eyes to all of this.

That's right, Gaza George. The truth is that you are a fake and care nothing about the Arabs or what is happening to them in other Middle East countries.. Your main purpose is just to diss Israel. By the way, did you even leave your hole-in-the wall today to enjoy the nice weather?
