During that time period, the Republican Party was primarily made up of Progressives and the Democratic Party was made up of mostly conservatives. John Wilkes Booth was a Copperhead Democrat. Less than 100 years later, John Wilkes Booth would have been an extreme Republican and Lincoln would have been a Democrat.
