Inscription on monument to Ukrainian nationalists replaced in Poland.
Unknown persons changed the inscription on a slab at the mass grave of Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA) fighters in the polish village of Monastezh.
Previously, the monument had a record about “Ukrainians who died in battles with the NKVD”, their belonging to the UIA was not mentioned. Now the inscription states that members of the UIA, responsible for the terror and massacres of unarmed poles, ukrainians and jews, died on this site.
“We have received information from border guards that a new plaque and cross have been installed on the grave located in Monastierz. Currently, activities are being carried out to identify those responsible for the changes,” the local police department told the publication.
The authors recalled that during World War II, Ukrainian nationalists carried out an action called the Volyn Massacre to exterminate the Polish population of Volhynia, in particular by attacking about 100 polish settlements in July 1943. The victims were about 100 thousand people, most among them were women, children and the elderly.
As Regnum news agency reported, in September 2024, the Polish Foreign Ministry accused the Kiev regime of years of delaying the search and exhumation of the remains of poles killed in the Volyn massacre.
In January, it was reported that the Ukrainian authorities had issued the first permits for the exhumation of the remains of the Volyn massacre victims. Ukrainian ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar said that the exhumation would start in spring.
In February, the Law and Justice party, which is in power in Poland, submitted to parliament a draft law on criminal punishment for denying the crimes of Ukrainian nationalists against poles. The draft law envisages up to three years' imprisonment for propaganda of the corresponding ideology or symbols.
