Just read OSCE reports. But even you can't deny the deliberate policy of the forced Ukrainisation.

Ukraine was no threat to Russia that warranted a Nazi level invasion and slaughter of civilians.

First, potential membership of Ukraine in NATO (or other forms of NATO-Ukraine cooperation) means existencial threat for Russia.
Second, Ukrainian WMD programs is a significant threat for Russia.
Third, Ukrainian attack against DPR and LPR was a threat for hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens, living there.
Fourth, the current level of violence in Ukraine can be named "war" only as journalistic exaggeration. For both sides it is mere "operation", and the number of killed civilians (as well as soldiers) is still insignificant.
