"UAW president applauds Trump administration for tariffs on foreign-made cars, says it ends "free trade disaster"

United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain, who has been critical of President Trump in the past, says the 25% tariffs on foreign-made cars is a step to "end the free trade disaster."

Mr. Trump announced on Wednesday that he would impose tariffs on automobiles and light trucks imported into the United States. The tariffs, he said, would go into effect on April 2, and the U.S. would start collecting the duties the following day. Mr. Trump said he believes the new import duty could raise between $600 billion and $1 trillion in revenue over the next two years.

White House officials predicted roughly $100 billion in revenue.

"This will continue to spur growth like you haven't seen before," Mr. Trump said from the Oval Office Wednesday afternoon. "We'll effectively be charging a 25% tariff. But if you build your car in the United States, there is no tariff."

Fain's response to tariffs on foreign-made cars
"We applaud the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has devastated working-class communities for decades. Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals, and the Trump administration has made history with today's actions." "

Sleep Joe and Kamala didn't do jack shit for the UAW. Welcome on board the Trump Train.

Democrats have been SCREWING over the working class and unions for the past 16 years. Apparently unions are fed up with the Dem's shit, flipped Dems the bird, told Dems to go F themselves repeatedly and joined team Trump for the U.S.A. wins!

Yep.

It's pretty simple really.

The Left via Bernie used to pledge to bring back American jobs, largely utilizing tariffs as a key tactic.

Now?

That's like, "far right Nationalism" or something.

Eventually, no matter how acutely bifurcated our political culture may be, substance defeats style.

And Trump happens to possess both.

Progressive free thread. I wonder why? :laughing0301:

The United Auto Workers (UAW) contracts with Ford, General Motors (GM), and Stellantis, which cover a significant portion of the auto industry workforce, are set to expire on April 30, 2028.

The above is the answer I receive when I ask Google about the union's current contract expiration date.

By 2028 with AI and robotics, most members will likely be in the same boat as the government employees fired and the folks replaced by kiosks at McDonalds after these past years minimum wage hikes.
