Keep in mind most of this debt was acquired during near zero interest rates and as the economy continues to grow more robustly, the debt will be refinanced at higher interest rates, so the cuts would have to be quite deep and that would cause a lot of pain, and it is doubtful the politicians who did this would be able to hold on to their jobs, so is an effort to reduce the debt through spending cuts sustainable?

Neither party is going to do anything about the national debt ony idiots pretend otherwise. The main reason neither will is because there is no quick easy painless bumpersticker type policy that will fix the problem just cutting spending as put out by the right won't do it just taxing the rich the lefts solution won't do it. To begin to deal with the national debt you would have to have massive tax hikes across the board on everyone and massive cuts in government spending with nothing off limits and this would have to continue for decades this debt was not run up in four to eight years and it won't go away in that amount of time either. Last we the people the voting public would never put in office the people who would do these things and if by some miracle we did when the pain from these type of measures kicked in we would quickly vote them out simply put neither the politicans or the public has the will to what would be necessary to deal with the national debt.
