Blocking sunlight will cause the extinction of everything, even us. A university professor should know that ALL life on Earth needs light. If they blocked the sunlight Earth would turn into an icy wasteland with no plants, no animals, and no people.

They are Idiots
Do you actually believe they would do that? Do you actually believe they could do that? Think of the geometry. If you want to put a shield up, it can't orbit the Earth. It has to remain in place with respect to the Sun Earth radial. That allows only one possibility: LaGrange point 1, a point on the Sun-Earth line 932,000 miles (about 1/100th the Earth-Sun distance) from Earth. A disk at L1 that would block all the sun's light to the Earth would have to be roughly 16,500 miles in diameter with an area of 213,824,650 square miles. At 25 grams/square meter, that would mass 5,345.6 metric tons, that would require 54 Starship flights and whatever it took to assemble and position the whole thing. And you think they would do all that BEFORE suddenly realizing that turning the sun black might have negative consequences?

It's not them that's the idiots.

"...While it can seem like the stuff of science fiction, ambitious proposals to alter the planet’s climate are increasingly being taken seriously as the effects of global warming grow more acute..."

Yes.

Depends on what they propose. I've argued that installing PV cells on 1% of the planet's land mass surface area would accomplish the same thing by converting solar energy into electricity instead of letting it warm the surface of the planet.

Thank you.... It sounded ridiculous to me on the face of it. You're right I should have just taken a deep breath and thought about it for a minute.

CORRECTION: Math error, Total mass would be 1,384,500,000 metric tons and so 13,845,000 Starship flights

So you are saying blocking the sun in space is even more dumb than blocking the sun with PV panels?
