A prominent Israeli politician has cancelled a visit to Belgium over fears she may be arrested on her arrival in Brussels over war crime allegations.

Tzipi Livni, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2006 - 2009 under former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, was due to arrive in the Belgian capital on Monday to unofficially attend a conference on tackling anti-Semitism in Europe and advancing the continentā€™s relations with the Jewish state.

However, her trip was cancelled after the Brussels prosecutorā€™s office said last week that Ms Livni is the subject of a 2010 complaint to the federal prosecutor, and the authorities could detain or question her on arrival

ā€œ. . .A group of victims filed a complaint in Belgium to the Federal Prosecutor against certain Israeli civilian and military officials at the time, including Tzipi Livni, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian News Network(PNN). --- Livni was the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time of the Israeli military operation ā€œCast Leadā€ in the Gaza Strip, which took place from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009"

"According to the summons, police wanted to question Livni, a Zionist Union Knesset member, on suspicion of involvement in war crimes during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2008, when she was foreign minister, vice prime minister and a member of the diplomatic-security cabinet."

"The subject of the questioning was Livni's involvement in suspected war crimes and violations of the Geneva Convention during the 2008 Cast Lead operation in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian organizations have filed a series of complaints against senior Israeli officials, including Livni, in recent years. "...her visits to the U.K. has been subject to legal threat due to the arrest warrants against her in connection with Israeli military action against Hamas in Gaza."

"Livni said that she came [ā€¦] to "speak about what I represent, the desire for peace --- Hamas, she added, continued to attack Israel despite the fact that Israel had left the Strip and abandoned its settlements in the territory. "Just two days ago, Hamas targeted a children center in Sderot. Thank God it was closed," she said."
