Based on what we have available to us, the video, the women threw the first punches. The video starts with him backing away, the women aggressively chasing him and one throwing a punch at him. He knocks her down, the other charges and throws a punch, he knocks her down. The first then charges again, he knocks her down again, and then he runs away to avoid the lynch mob.

I figure he ran away to avoid being taken to jail.
