Regarding wage increases, you have to consider the buying power of those wages during each presidency. Wages had more buying power in Reagan's term than in Clinton's, thereby making any increase in real wages more substantial during Reagan's than Clinton's.

Off the final thread to the gold standard and the costs of all of the social welfare programs beginning to mount and expand at double digits and more every year. With corruption and gaming the system gaining momentum. Social Security began to see the oldest generation retire in higher and higher numbers. The debts mounted with stagflation there for all to see. Real Wages and Economic growth stayed low and a constant moderate to higher inflation with the Quotas and Diversity becoming prominent at the same time. The Federal Reserve got rid of the bad debt it could with double digit prime rates. It was fun. The tax breaks for the peasants were incredible with at the time IRA tax breaks that had some removed after a couple of years. Indexing for inflation in the tax code and a reduction of tax brackets also. Without that the peasants would be paying double or so in federal taxes now. %0 thousand dollars a year does not go to far today as back then.

Reagan did no such thing. The only union he dealt with was the air traffic control and they broke their contract when they went on strike. After the recession people came to the realization that unions were nothing but a bubble, no different than the housing bubble or tech bubble. All bubbles burst. Because of unions, over taxation and regulations, jobs were leaving the country by the millions every year, and Reagan took measures to try and slow that down.

US Consumers kept increasing their purchases of foreign made products. Japanese made cars became common on our roads. Unions chased jobs out of the country, and politicians had little to do with that. It was the private market that killed unions for survival.

Bingo. I was just about to say the same thing, although I had it pegged a few years earlier. The country started to go downhill beginning in the mid-60s, just about the time LBJ introduced the welfare programs.
