Ukraine was a part of The Soviet Union from 1919 until 1991. They seemed to fair quite well during those decades.

I'm not sure reasserting Russian control would be a fate worse than death.

Ultimately, that's a matter for Russia and The Ukrainians to decide.

At 3:18 in your opening video, that correspondent said, that Angela Merkel put that statement that NATO wanted to offer a NATO Membership Action Plan, or MAP to Georgia and Ukraine. It made it sound, like. . . it was HER idea, when, in fact, both she, and Nicholas Sarkozy were vehemently opposed to the idea, and were strong armed by Bush into doing that.

By offering Georgia a member action plan? It led to Russia's invasion, because of Georgia's behavior toward ethnic Russians in the summer of 2008.
