Trump's Second Foreign Policy Crisis: Syria

Looks like someone made it our business.....we just launched 75 airstrikes.

Joins the long list of Presidents and sycophants that have a special place in hell for the things they have done.

Yes, I can.

Obama's policy, which was adopted by Biden, was regime change. That included arming al Qaeda and other Islamist groups in Syria with weapons looted from Ghadaffi's armories in Libya. What would come next was never a consideration.

Trump's policy was to take down ISIS (who built a caliphate thanks to Obama's feckless Iraq withdrawal), who were busy hacking heads off of civilians and taking hostages from western countries and our allies, and then get the hell out.

Trump had the sense to leave Syria as Putin's problem, made easier after Obama and John Kerry handed Putin an engraved invitation to deal with Assad's chemical weapons.

The more Russia propped up Assad, the more the Islamists in Syria would turn on Russia, rather than us. Trump recognized that and made the smart move. Russia is the one making the ignominious withdrawal from Syria now, not the US...

Trump’s policy was to do nothing, He does get credit for one targeted assassination.

But he had no clear policy. And little real interest.

After making a show of cautioning Assad over barrel bombs, he said nothing. And Assad went back to dropping them. Trump did what the Russians told him to do, which was to withdraw.

And now, Assad and his Russian masters are out. Hopefully, the Syrians expel them, forcing Russia to move its Mediterranean squadron back to the Baltic.

Wrong again dipshit.

First, the US had no compelling interest in Syria beyond taking down ISIS, which is exactly what Trump did.

Second, when Assad ignored Trump's warning, he bombed the shit out of Shayrat Airbase with Tomahawk missiles. It was Putin that withdrew the Russian fleet from Tartus when Trump told him what was about to happen.

And when Russian troops attacked US forces in eastern Syria, they got their asses kicked, and Putin could do nothing about it.

Trump is not afraid of Putin, and never was. Both Trump and Putin were fully aware that the Dem narrative was a political fabrication. Neither leader wants a war, and that is just a basic common sense realization that you cannot grasp.

Your TDS and Putin fixation have rotted your brain. Go scream at the lake. :fu:

It should be noted that the Russian failure to support Assad, which the Russians had supported to a greater or lessor degree since the 1970’s, is a clear indication that they are far weaker than they pretend to be.

Hey stupid, Russia did not move its fleet . It’s still there

US forces based all over Syria.... bet we had something to do with the coup.
We are (were?) supporting the SDF (Kurds) in Northeastern Syria, mostly against the Turkish-supported SNA. The SNA have clashed with US backed forces there, we had some troops killed and wounded earlier this year.

We have forces along the border with Jordan and Iraq, in a so-called de-confliction zone, and are supporting an unspecified anti-Assad rebel force.

The HTS will probably make nice with the SNA, but consider the US an enemy, and they are a designated terrorist organization. What becomes of the forces in the de-confliction zone is anyone's guess.

Islamists are in control of Syria now. How they play it is another anyone's guess...

The fleet returned to extract some weapons (S-400's and some other ADA stuff). One of the Frigates never left. The Kilo and 2 Frigates, and one of the oilers did. That was well documented.

They will not remain without Assad in power.

You are conflating events. The missile strike on Shayrat Airbase was in 2017, and Putin pulled the fleet out during that strike. What ISW is referring to is current. Do try to keep up.

So document it then .

There are already threads on that, I am not here to educate you.

The pullout I was referring to in my reply to Fitz, which you replied to, was when Trump did the missile strike in 2017 in response to Assad's use of chemical weapons.

You confused it with the current situation, so un-confuse your own self. I have better things to do.

They relocated to the oil rich regions......same year.
That was just a few troops. We had 2000 troops in Syria hunting ISIS. Trump pulled them out after taking down ISIS, and left a few forces guarding the oilfields with the Kurds.

The poster thinks a piece of empty desert with a makeshift airstrip and some empty bunkers is an "airbase"... :cuckoo:

The Russians have had the Naval base at Tartus since the 1970's. It had fallen into disrepair after the fall of the USSR. When Obama and Kerry invited Russia back into Syria, Putin poured a bunch of money into that base to revive it. They have kept a small fleet there ever since.

A couple frigates, replenishment ships, sometimes a Kilo. It has been the main supply port for Russian assistance to Assad since that time.
