Trump's Second Foreign Policy Crisis: Syria

Trump's first foreign policy issue is going to be Ukraine.

His second issue, which may supplant Ukraine, is Syria.

Syria is crumbling. Assad may be gone before Trump is sworn in.

As the primary rebel force, Hyat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), has been enjoying recent success, other factional rebel groups have been cropping up like weeds.

The latest rebel group calls itself the Southern Operations Room.

Putin has abandoned Assad due to his preoccupation with the war in Ukraine.

Iran is also abandoning Syria as they are distracted by Israel.

1500 to 2000 Syrian troops have turned tail and entered Iraq.

Hezbollah has entered Syria to stem the tide of Syrian rebels who are now close enough to be a threat to Tripoli in northern Lebanon.

Once Assad falls, all of these rebel organizations are going to be fighting each other to fill the power vacuum, and we can be sure there will be vicious recriminations against anyone connected to the Assad regime.

HTS is the dominant rebel organization, but none of the factions can be considered anything close to moderate.

It's going to be a bloody mess, and Trump is going to have to get up to speed quickly.

He's already up to speed. He just needs for the turnip to get out of the way.

I think our foreign policy over the last 100 years has helped fuck up the Middle East enough. Let those 7th century neanderthals sort their own shit out. They've been fighting over there for thousands of years.
keep them from getting nukes and let them work out the rest among themselves ..

Why don't you tell us about Biden's foreign policy regarding Syria?

I think that would be a good starting place.
Not only Biden's, but other presidents too.
It worked...........

9 hours ago · Syrian state television aired a video statement by a group of men saying that President Bashar Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners had been set free.

Look who jailed them.

Likely prisoners of war or political prisoners.
somehow---the country has to come under control.
All kinds of evil forces can invade. The US CANNOT
REMAIN PASSIVE

Trump armed the rebels
Yep

The Trump administration in May 2017, however, approved a plan to begin arming the Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance in Syria made up of mostly Kurds and some Arab fighters, which has helped oust ISIS from its stronghold in Raqqa.

Yes and a year later he pulled US forces out of Syria and you lefties all accused him of abandoning our "allies".

Trump had it exactly right- leave that mess to Putin to deal with. It's not our problem, and any US involvement can only backfire.

The SDF was not involved in the offensive that took down Assad, they are in northeastern Syria. Biden has been supporting them supposedly against the remnants of ISIS, but mainly they are fighting the SNA which is backed by Turkey. SNA fighters recently attacked US forces in Syria.

The HTS is the group that made the recent offensive that took down Assad. They are a designated terrorist organization as per the US, UK, Canada, and the EU.

"...the United States has nothing to do with this offensive, which is led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a designated terrorist organization."

-Statement from the White House

So you have an Islamist terrorist group in control of Syria, US backed forces who are fighting other forces backed by a NATO ally, an ongoing civil war, and no idea what will come next.

And you fucking idiots are going on about Trump, and you cannot describe a coherent US policy regarding Syria because it does not exist.

So just stop it. That is a gigantic mess, Biden has no coherent policy, and whatever Trump inherits is NOT his creation.

Trump armed the rebels
Only in the context of taking down ISIS, and only because they (ISIS) were also attacking the Kurds.

And that was a mess he inherited from Obama, who sat back and watched ISIS march in from Syria and build a caliphate in Iraq.

Trump took ISIS down, and when he was done he pulled US forces out of Syria, and that was the smart move.
