How did that work out?

It worked out to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia literally told us almost 20 years ago that they would not accept Ukraine joining NATO that it was the reddest of red lines for them. (CONFIDENTIAL: WikiLeaks Document PROVES U.S. Knew NATO Expansion Would Cause Russia/Ukraine War | The Libertarian Institute) That they viewed it as an existential threat, to their country. That happened under Bush and we have through 3 admins ignored those warnings and continued to expand NATO and move forward with putting Ukraine in NATO. We supported and propped up a coup to overthrow a democratically elected government in Ukraine because it was "pro Russia" and install a pro west one which supported NATO induction which the pro Russian Government dd not support. Prior to the invasion during the lead up and ramping up of troops on the border Putin told the head of NATO that if he gave him written assurance that NATO wouldn't seek to put Ukraine into NATO that he wouldn't invade. Didn't happen. In fact the NATO leader bragged about it as if he were standing up to Putin.

Now, Ukraine has a reason and support to join NATO.
