It was all trial and error then and the medical profession watched in despair patient after patient--people that should have survived the virus--get sicker and sicker until they were severely and permanently damanged or dead. Others for reasons nobody knew why, sailed through with little or no noticeable illness or recovered with few if any side effects.

Among our friends and families, three didn't make it and died. Others were very ill and suffered long lasting side effects. Others were barely sick if they had any symptoms at all.

Like many others, President Trump, reinforced by a lot of medical and disease control experts, did a lot of thinking out loud about what might or might not work.

Ethical and intellectually honest people allowed him and the others that and didn't make anything out of it other than what it was.
