The police officer had been listening to radio transmissions of his fellow police officers being mauled by the terrorists for several hours. Some were sending their last messages to their families in the belief they were about to die.

So when the mob reached his barricade and smashed the glass and one of them surmounted that final barricade, the officer did his duty.
