The difference is that when the gop controlled the Senate (and House) Obama sent Biden over to seek a compromise

McConnell DID get bipartisan support (COMPROMISE) for corporate tax modifications. And Obama and the dems had long agreed that changes were needed. Schumer and McConnell TWICE thought Trump was on board with compromises on spending (and once on the Wall and DACA) only to have Trump pull the rug out after the bills were passed.

McConnell is saying he's not going to try to influence Trump on the Wall or shutdown. That's not typically the role of the majority leader. He says there's no need to compromise because he doesn't need dem votes, but last week all that changed. Still, I'm not going to say he'd be wrong in thinking that a. if he pisses off Trump by urging compromise he might get primaried in 20, and b. with Trump's chosing to renege on deals, there's no reason to chance it.
