Trump persona non gratis

The majority of reports and opinions I am seeing on this entire situation seem to think this will backfire on Trump. It seems likely.

Also, Trump himself did not go bankrupt. But he did file bankruptcy for some of his business affairs.

Veterans’ Groups Line up to Reject Money from Trump (if He is Even Raising Any)
By: Leon H. Wolf (Leon H. Wolf (Diary) | January 27th, 2016 at 08:19 PM | 5

Trump’s standard line when he is about to storm out of a media event because he doesn’t like how it covers him is that he is going to go host an event to raise money for veterans. Thus it was no surprise when he announced that he would be skipping the FoxNews event to hold a separate event to raise money for… well, “veterans,” generally. Of course, Trump did not name a specific charity so that his feet might be held to the fire on this, just “veterans,” generally.

Well, there are two small problems. The main veterans group that Trump has used for publicity stunts in the past, the Wounded Warrior Project, was the subject of a scathing CBS report and recently lost their tax exempt status. Besides, if Trump is planning on using them, he hasn’t told anyone from the group. Per CNN, the Wounded Warrior Project has not even been contacted by Trump about possibly doing an event tomorrow.

If he is doing it for some other group, they are now lining up to say that they don’t want any money Trump might make off of promoting himself, and will reject it if offered.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America founder Paul Rieckhoff tweeted Wednesday that he would decline any contributions that came from the event, which Trump has proposed in place of his attending Fox News’ debate this week.

“If offered, @IAVA will decline donations from Trump’s event. We need strong policies from candidates, not to be used for political stunts,” he said.

* * *

Two other veterans’ groups also distanced themselves from Trump’s announcement.

The Wounded Warrior Project said it was not aware of the candidate conducting any fundraising efforts on its behalf.

Meanwhile, VoteVets.org, which calls itself the nation’s largest progressive veterans group, issued a statement titled: “Don’t hide from Megyn Kelly behind us.”

Trump has tried to tie fundraising for veterans with debates in the past. He said he had considered skipping CNN debates in September and December unless the network donated to veterans’ groups.

Vote Vets is of course a lefty group, but the other two announcements are telling. Money is money, and if groups are pre-emptively declining it, that’s a pretty good indication of just how tired of Donald Trump’s crap the vast majority of the country is getting.

Of course, all of this assumes that Trump had any plans of giving the money to Veterans in the first place, as opposed to just saying that he was going to so that his temper tantrum would look more noble.

Thanks to our commenter TNGal for finding this story.

Yeah I imagine there aren't too many Vets that would support Donald Trump--he has insulted them.

In an effort to take out frontrunner Donald Trump, Republican presidential candidates have pelted Trump with criticism over his multiple trips to federal bankruptcy court.

That criticism was on full display in CNN’s Republican debate Sept. 16. Most notably, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina criticized Trump’s history of bankruptcies in his businesses.

"You know, there are a lot of us Americans who believe that we are going to have trouble someday paying back the interest on our debt because politicians have run up mountains of debt using other people's money," Fiorina said. "That is in fact precisely the way you ran your casinos. You ran up mountains of debt, as well as losses, using other people's money, and you were forced to file for bankruptcy not once, not twice, four times."

Trump doesn’t deny that four of his businesses have filed for bankruptcy. He argues, however, that filing for bankruptcy is a common business decision, and he was smart to make the moves when he did.

"Hundreds of companies" have filed for bankruptcy, Trump said earlier in the debate. "I used the law four times and made a tremendous thing. I'm in business. I did a very good job."

Cut and paste tl;dr

Some of Trump's Atlantic City businesses filed for bankruptcy protection. Business is a gamble. When there was no other gambling resorts in the Northeast, investing in and building in Atlantic City was a good decision. Profits were made. But Atlantic City went to shit, and other gambling resort destination were available.

I'm waiting for a copy of "All Things Must End: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records" documentary to become available out here. Same thing. Having huge music stores was a great business...until digital music made it not-so-great. They went bankrupt, eventually...all businesses will.

Montgomery Wards was HUGE when I was a kid...bankrupt. Woolworth and Lothrop was my parents generations department store giant...bankrupt. Sears, bankrupt...bought by Kmart...Kmart has been bankrupt. And one day WalMart and Amazon will file for bankruptcy. It's the cycle of business.

Trying to turn it into a political football just makes you look foolish.

Now...if Trump couldn't handle him PERSONAL finances, THAT would be politically relevant. But, his personal finances are stellar.

That's why you liberal liars attempt to conflate BUSINESS bankruptcy with PERSONAL bankruptcy.

Then you get called on it, and look dishonest and foolish.

If you honestly didn't know, I respectfully retract the dishonest and foolish remarks. You have been duped by liberal and conservative media that wishes to conflate personal and business bankruptcy for political advantage.

My apologies.
