Trump Jobs Slump - Las Vegas sheds thousands of jobs amid tourism slump

‘Las Vegas shed thousands of jobs last month amid an ongoing tourism slump, according to a new report, which found Nevada’s labor market is “largely stationary.”

Employment in the Las Vegas area fell by 4,300 jobs from July to August, a drop of 0.4 percent, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Thursday, using seasonally adjusted data.

Statewide, employment levels are effectively unchanged from a year ago, the department found.

All told, the report shows “a labor market that is largely stationary,” David Schmidt, the department’s chief economist, said in a news release.

Nevada is by no means alone, as hiring has largely stalled around the country.’

It’s the same problem: Trump’s reckless, irresponsible trade wars are causing economic anxiety resulting in fewer people taking vacations – particularly expensive vacations to Las Vegas.
There may be cases where trumps tarriffs can be linked to layoffs but not this one.

I've been watching this for a while in vegas and it has nothing to do with Trump.

The major casinoes in vegas have changed their business model and methods under new leadership. This has been going on for some time now. They are deliberately attempting to discourage tourism from common working class people and instead focusing on the whales. They are catering only to millionaires or higher.

Word has gotten out about this and tourism in general has been declining which means less need for staff or people to support tourism.

How this model will work out for them in the long run is anyones guess but it has nothing to do with tarriffs.

They aren't the only game in town, so to speak, anymore. Legalized casinos in many states, Indian casinos, online sports betting are taking the smaller gamblers out of the picture--why go to Vegas and pay exorbitant lodging and food costs when you can gamble close to home. I agree--Vegas is focusing on high rollers.

Yes it is probably a logical progression to many people. They have a lot more competition than ever so they have to do something to stay profitable.

I get it but it feels a little sad. Back int he day almost anyone could afford the occasional trip to vegas and a have a blast. Those days appear to be over.

It's not limited to Las Vegas and it's not over.

17,000,000 fewer US citizens employed per population in August 2025 than when Trump & Republicans took office January 2025. These numbers will be much worse in 5 days when the Jobs numbers Trump has been holding back for 2 months get released.

There are now 20 million more unemployed when Trump cuts their healthcare, food, shelter, etc.

Vegas used to be a cheap destination with good deals on flights.
Now it's just another overpriced tourist trap.

Excellent, good news.

Oh goodness gracious, how is not possible that the explosion of online betting services and gambling, in a modern world and easily accessible at one's fingertips, might not shed more light on why Las Vegas is seeing a tourism slump.

Do you seriously think that young people who are so invested in immediate gratification, will go as far as spending money they could be betting on their phone, on an airline ticket to a place where they can go gamble?

It is quite possible Las Vegas hasn't seen the worst of it yet, and it could have nothing to do with President Trump.

LOL, an airline ticket to a place where you sweat in a swimming pool 3/4 of the year. No thanks.
