So it's true. Republicans can't point to not even ONE big city, not even in Texas, and say "this is the shining example of how to do it."
What would you guys do differently if given the opportunity to run a big city? Would you work like hell to bring economic opportunity or would you just be tougher on crime?
I'll be honest. I don't believe the Mayor of Detroit is really a Democrat. I don't think a Republican can win in Detroit so he had to run as a Democrat. White, former CEO, rich.
Anyways, I believe Mike Duggan is probably a Republican and he's done an excellent job of turning Detroit around. It's too big to completely fix. So many blocks after blocks of old neighborhoods and no jobs around for people to go work even if they wanted to. But downtown has been fixed up. Whites are moving back to certain parts of the city. Gentrification is happening. He has torn down a lot of abandoned homes/neighborhoods and built new.
And I don't think Dan Gilbert or the 4 other guys who own practically the entire city are Democrats, but they have done an amazing job fixing up downtown.
I can say bad things too like blacks aren't benefiting from it. Or I should say, most of the people benefiting from those jobs are white people. Example, Quicken Loans opens in downtown Detroit. All the people who work there are white and drive in from the suburbs. The locals don't work at Quicken Loans. The locals benefit but only with waiter jobs, security jobs or housekeeping jobs. Low wage jobs. Or working at the Casino's. But not management position. You know what I mean?
