For many years before the BCS era, not only did the Rose Bowl feature the Pac-whatever champions playing the Big Ten champs (the only major bowl to do so), but the Sugar Bowl featured the SouthEastern conference (SEC) champ playing an “at-large” team; the Cotton Bowl featured the now-defunct SouthWest conference (SWC) playing an at-large team; the Orange Bowl had the then-Big Eight (now Big 12 when they merged with several schools from the SWC) champs against an at-large team. https://www.quora.com/How-do-Rose-Bowl-teams-get-picked

Why not bring back these traditional matchups as the first round of an 8 Team CF Playoff?

With 8 teams, you have 3 more games to go: two semi-finals and the National Championship game. Do you re-use the stadiums for any of those 3 games?
