"Total Boomer Luxury Communism"

Everyone’s handouts, young and old, are getting cut. The pain will be broadly shared.
The old EARNED their Social Security.

The young welfare leeches are the ones getting handouts. They feel so entitled to free stuff that they won’t even pay for their own soda and candy!

Fine by me. I have zero plans to factor in Social Security for my retirement. It's a Ponzi Scheme with a paltry payout. George Bush had the right idea 20 years ago with his idea for private accounts, guaranteeing we would get back the money we paid in at a much higher interest rate, but you people demagogued it to death and killed the proposal because it makes people less dependent on the government.

If SS still exists when I retire, it will be a pleasant bonus.
Somehow, your brag doesn't strike me as being humble. Private accounts (stock market) sounds wonderful until 1929 revisited.

No it still sounds better because you are taking a once in a lifetime event and using as an excuse to ignore the reality of this Ponzi scheme model because you can’t accept the fact your being ripped off. And if you wanna be ripped off, that’s great I’m not going to force you not to be stolen from if you wanna stand there like a jackass and smile as you’re ripped off that’s your prerogative what we’re going to do is not continue to fund theft, embezzlement, and fraud and if you don’t like it (drops bolt on AR) tough shit.

Democracy isn’t a suicide pact, not sorry

I'm 43. I would prefer to we eliminate SS altogether and let people be responsible for their own retirement.
That would increase the homeless population by leaps and bounds. You might be a financially responsible person. If only everyone could be like you, but the majority aren't.

And that won’t be happening now?

“We can’t change the system or else bad things will happen!” That’s your excuse for everything.

Well those that aren’t are going to suffer, just like now, difference is, now those who are are still suffering, that’s wrong.

I'm not being ripped off. I'm receiving back the money that I socked away in the SSA during 47 years of work. It's my money, stolen to hold for me, so I wouldn't foolishly spend it. I've been rolling in my sweet baby's arms for 8 years now. I have actually exceeded my money (I think) and am now living pure boomer communist. I like it.

My idea of changing the system is the overthrow of the US government by force. Know your audience.

I've been seeing this phrase more often lately. I suspect it presages a new fault line that will become increasingly prominent in American politics over the next half decade. In the next year or so, the largest cuts ever to food assistance and health care for low-income people will take effect; in a few weeks young people behind on their student loans will start to see their wages garnished; the housing shortage will continue to keep a key slice of the American dream out of reach for many young families, child care will continue to be exorbitant and fertility rates will continue their downward creep, who knows if the moribund job market will resurrect. All of this will disproportionately fall on working age individuals and families.

Meanwhile, in 4-5 years we're likely to see the Boomers step forward hat-in-hand to ask--or perhaps more likely demand--that those families intervene to head off the coming automatic ~24% cut to Social Security checks (and the potential pare backs to Medicare benefits coming not too long after). When that moment and that debate come, do the increasingly combustible intergenerational tensions ignite?

I think you are looking at this all wrong. It's the millinneals that are fucked. Better start saving now.

That was my approach too. To my surprise it's still there. So even if there is a 24% cut in 2033, it's still gravy.

I’d be for that as well, but two issues:

1) You can’t pull that on current retirees or those near retirement.

Agreed. We'd have to do a type of age means testing. People at or under a certain age, say 40, can expect a lower benefit than what is available today. Those under 30 an even lower one and then completely phased out for anyone under 20, for example.

2) You’d still be left with a large group of irrrsponsible people - even those who earn $100,000+ - who will spend like there’s no tomorrow, and they’ll end up at age 65 with $10,000 saved for their golden years (if that), and they will cry that they have no money, can’t afford rent, can’t buy groceries, no way to pay next month’s heating bill, etc., etc., and bleeding heart liberals will end up bailing them out, and using the money from the responsible people.

There will always be irresponsible people no matter what we do. There was a time when family was expected to be responsible for those who couldn't take appropriate care for themselves.

Precisely why I expect the Boomer push to extract more wealth from subsequent generations to founder.

Similarly, there was a time fathers were expected to provide for their offspring, rather than expect government (translation: other people) to pay for them,

I don't see it like that at all. Not even close. I paid in like everyone else. In fact, way more than most. Should I feel bad for you?

Suffering is coming to a great many people. There's no two ways about it. Life isn't fair. Expect to make sacrifices.

What do your feelings have to do with anything?

Indeed, that’s the point of the thread. We’re about five years away from a great adjustment. Expect to make sacrifices.

Not a damn thing. So I'm wondering why your OP was an attempt at guilt tripping people on social security that are taking their earned benefits.

And before you argue you were doing no such thing, I suggest you take a look at the title of your OP.
