As representatives of the party of segregation and racial bigotry, i.e., the democrats, they felt it was their duty to inject themselves into the story and put focus on the incident, especially the racial component, so as to keep the segregationist black voting block involved and corralled.

Both Obama and Holder rushed into this situation without the knowledge necessary to exercise leadership. Instead, they pandered to one side of the discussion.

In most cases, the DOJ allows the local legal community to process the incident - investigation, grand jury, and trial before they consider federal charges. Typically, they use federal civil rights violations to punish those they feel got away with the crime. They normally use the local investigation as their baseline, and then make their own determination. This is done in order to minimize cost and upheaval over the situation.

This is not true, however, with the Holder DOJ for this case. Their early involvement, being contrary to the normal process, clearly indicated that the federal government had no confidence in the local or state police, nor faith in the local judicial system. In short, they indicated, through their actions, that they believed their early involvement was critical to avoiding a cover-up or a racially biased investigation. Given Holder's often stated antipathy toward white cops, this added credibility and fuel to the anti-justice groups.

Obama, of course, shares some of the blame because he is Holder's boss. In addition, his speeches, prior to the release of the decision, and after, did nothing to confirm our commitment to the rule of law. His message should have been "The jury has spoken, and the decision was made. That ends it."

While he paid passing lip service to it, he, as well, clearly left the impression that this was simply another white cop-killing-a-black-kid-just-because-he's-black case where the establishment would do whatever was necessary to arrive at their desired political solution. The lack of conviction the president showed, and his failure to convincingly condemn rioting with passion and commitment, helped to contribute to the problem. He was not able to be the president for all of us; he was only able to be the president for some of us.
