There are many reasons why stores close. Here are some possibilities:

Increasing energy prices affect everything. Mining, manufacturing, transporting materials and products, operating the stores, and driving to stores to buy products all use energy. Suburban stores are hit particularly hard, with the huge buildings, huge parking lots, and taxes to pay for maintenance of suburban infrastructure. If they get tax breaks, then the customers pay for maintenance and have less money to spend.

We have vast numbers of people who take their cuts from projects and financial transactions without adding value to any product or service. These middlemen, tax collectors, inspectors, document stampers, etc., are both government and private enterprise. The cuts they take cripple many businesses, especially small businesses, so they never become profitable. Many of these positions are designed by corporations to cripple and eliminate smaller competitors.

More people are realizing they don't find happiness in buying. They stop at what they need and go elsewhere to do more satisfying activities.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem in SOME PLACES with this. Dealing with crime in the US is fucking mental. The police are a bunch of former army grunts with more balls than IQ who think their army training is police training. The politicians are messed up on BOTH SIDES.

However, the issue of stores closing isn't one of just stores closing because of crime.

More than 2,800 stores are closing across the US in 2023. Here's the full list.

Rite Aid plans to close 154 drugstores, and at least 20 major retail chains, including its rival CVS, are shutting locations in 2023.

Seems bad business decisions, nepotism.

So, it was in republican states, democratic states, mixed states. Doesn't seem like it was due to democrats, does it?

Seems more likely sales were down because online is where it's at, seeing how it still exists as an online presence.

Do not forget that many of the stores closed were pharmacies, and these days most insurance companies require you to get any on-going prescriptions via mail order, thus reducing the need for in person pharmacies.
