I agree it is pathetic that U.S. politics should have fallen to this level, where an unprincipled demagogue, conman actor and truly dangerous narcissist can “charm” his way into the hearts of so many citizens.

Of course being fed up with traditional politics is a part of this, as is believing the hysteria and conspiracy politics of the right and the shameless lies of this very demagogue. It isn’t necessarily only that he appeals to the “lowest common denominator” … since he also appeals to evangelicals and many relatively ordinary people who see him as either a “savior” or just “a battering ram” to bring the “Establishment” down.

Many of these people are just fantasists or shallow politically, people who really have very little idea of the damage a movement of opportunists and grifters led by a demagogue like Trump running the most powerful country in the world can bring about.
