Usually a 'Hail Mary' is played by a losing team in the last minutes of the last quarter, usually it doesn't work and sometimes it results in a interception and the opposing side running the ball back.
John McCain's desparate selection of Sarah Palin, was a completely miscalculated and way to early 'Hail Mary'. Intercepted, the Democrats are slowly but carefully running this ball back for a touchdown. If anything this has insured a Democratic victory:
1. This will not attract Clinton supports to vote for McCain. Instead it insults their intelligence. Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton.
2. Though Palin may appeal to the Republican base, it won't help McCain. Like McCain or not, they were already going to vote against Obama anyway. He doesn't need to rally them, he needed to gain support from the middle of the road independants.
3. BIMBOs don't fit the comander-in-chief image. If there was ever a candidate that needed a VP that people could have confidence in as a commander-in-chief, it is McCain. This alone is going to cause a whole lot of people to categorically reject the McCain/Palin ticket.
4. This totally undermines McCain's argument that Obama doesn't have enough experience and shows, in John McCain's first "Presidential Decision" that he has extremely poor judgement, that his choice was completely political without regard for the welfare of the country. Obama's choice of Joe Biden was the opposite, not politically very good, but an exemplary choice for the good of the country. Very few people would lack confidence in Joe Biden as commander-in-chief.
5. Sarah Palin is a cute little housewife who happened to stumble upon a sea of corruption in Alaska politics, the most corrupt state in the union, at a time when Alaskans are sick and tired of corruption. She is a good women, but a long shot away from qualifying to be one old and worn out heartbeat away from the Presidency.
6. She's a BIMBO, a nice BIMBO, but still a BIMBO. The porn industry is going to have a field day. Not her fault and totally unjust, but still...
"President MILF" doesn't cut it.
The only hope that a McCain/Palin ticket has is if Obama or Biden says something rude or Chauvanistic against her, like calling her a BIMBO. Joe Biden has to be careful not to be seen as a bully in the debates. But the Democrats seem to have figured that out an are being awfully careful not to be too critical of her.
This is like planning a 'Hail Mary', assuming that the other team will intercept, but hoping that they'll fumble. It ain't going to happen.
The only reasonable assumption is that McCain knows that this election is hopeless, so he decided to be a good soldier and for the sake of the GOP, nominated her for the VP position just to introduce her to the American people and establish her a major GOP figure.
This election is over!
