yeah, you don't get to choose your assignment (or those are the rules) and Nixon complied with rules and did his duty.

A tragically flawed and very talented president. I admit to prejudice as I sought to not participate in his war. Although I didn't have a tame doctor and just plain got lucky.

Too young at the time, but I later served in the Army.

I have mixed feelings on Nixon. He was very talented, but he didn't know the ground had shifted.

My late father was a Nixon supporter. To his dying day, he felt Nixon didn't do anything that his predecessors hadn't done, he just got caught. (It didn't help that he taped everything!)

Nixon came at the end of a string of guys who were considered some of the greats, but Vietnam and the civil rights movement degraded the office of the presidency. It's never really been the same since.

Podcasts and social media seem to be the dominant source of info these days for those under 35. That's a huge problem given the problem the US has with rampant disinformation.

A couple of conservative Brits discuss the Woke Right with an American conservative. And just like many lefties are against the PC/Identity Politics crap that has caused so much damage to the party, he sees that "Wokeism" is counter-productive on the Right as well.

His definition of Woke Right includes:

• Since this comes from the Right, he calls it "Woke Neo-Fascism", which makes sense
• They behave exactly like the Woke Left...
  • Targeted influence campaigns
  • Create the illusion that there's massive distaste for this or that
  • Social Media manipulation
  • Highly invested in Reactionary Identity Politics, "answering evil with evil, which the Bible says not to do, by the way"
  • Grievance, everything is bad for straight white Christian men
  • We're the oppressed minority
  • Convinced the elites are trying to marginalize and de-legitimize them
  • Lots of lying, character attacks, lots of manipulative speech
  • Critical of America -- America bad, America bad, America bad

Yeah. And that's the biggest problem here: This is cultural. America elevates shallow people to massively influential status, makes celebrities out of them, and worships them.

That's at the core of my issue with Trumpism. It's not about politics for me, it's about who we are. America values the wrong things, and we're paying for it right now.

Once something becomes cultural, it's a much bigger and tougher fuckin' stain to wash out.

Yep. The two parties don't really represent different ideologies anymore, at least not with regard to their usual disagreement: the Constitutional role of government. These days it's all about the culture war. Each is intent on using the state to "transform" America.

You’re not a critical thinker, not on this issue anyway.
The two parties have never been further apart on ideologies….that’s the only reason the culture war exists. Only one party wants the state to force you to accept an unauthorized change in demography, only one wants to force you to accept Mexico’s people maiming, raping and murdering our daughters, only one wants to force you to believe faggotry is normal, only one wants men shitting next to our daughters and playing in women's athletics, only one wants to force you to embrace EQUITY, only one wants you to pay black people for being black.
