yeah, you don't get to choose your assignment (or those are the rules) and Nixon complied with rules and did his duty.
A tragically flawed and very talented president. I admit to prejudice as I sought to not participate in his war. Although I didn't have a tame doctor and just plain got lucky.
Too young at the time, but I later served in the Army.
I have mixed feelings on Nixon. He was very talented, but he didn't know the ground had shifted.
My late father was a Nixon supporter. To his dying day, he felt Nixon didn't do anything that his predecessors hadn't done, he just got caught. (It didn't help that he taped everything!)
Nixon came at the end of a string of guys who were considered some of the greats, but Vietnam and the civil rights movement degraded the office of the presidency. It's never really been the same since.
