But because their children (mom, dad, uncle, aunt) were all intelligent, motivated, hard-working students, they earned a free college education and moved into the middle class.

This was the IDENTICAL opportunity available to their black classmates. Many were smart and motivated enough to take advantage of it.

I received nothing of value from my parents or family. They contributed nothing to my higher education; I joined the Army to get help with that. My inheritance from my parents was, I inherited the right to house my dad for the last ten years of his life (which was a blessing).

While racial discrimination was a real issue while I was growing up, by the time I hit the job market as an adult (early '70's), it was a virtual advantage to be a POC.

Most of all, I have observed through most of my adult life the phenomenon of Blacks folks doing things to themselves that kept them behind the figurative eight-ball - mainly ignoring the institution of marriage en masse, and living lives of petty and serious crimes, as well as financial foolishness.

It was a privilege to be brought up in an intact, religious family where respect for others and respect for society's conventions ruled, and where it was presumed that if I lived my life according to middle-class values everything would work out fine. And it did. And for that I'm thankful.

I suspect that many Blacks who don't have intimate contact with ordinary White people look at the lifestyles of White people in scripted entertainment, where everyone lives an upper-middle class life without having to work for it, and they think that real White people live like that. Excellent post, but I take exception to your claim that you received nothing of value from your family. To the contrary, you received an upbringing during which proper values were instilled.
