The number of first-time filings for unemployment insurance fell to 249,000 last week, according to the Department of Labor.

That's just 1,000 more than the lowest level of this economic cycle, in April.

The four-week average of claims, which evens out some of the week-by-week volatility, fell by 2,500, to 253,500, the lowest level since December 8, 1973.

Ah, the good ole 70's. Sky high inflation, unemployment and interest rates. Working folks priced out of buying cars or homes. Savings destroyed. Businesses stagnated.

But what I really miss are the gas lines. Missing work and/or school because you couldn't get gas.

I remember taking my bicycle to work and weaving between the cars in line for gas. While my car sat parked, I continued to make my car payments and insurance payments wondering why I owned a car if I took my bicycle to work.
