Not really. The US is larger than all of Europe. There was never a "need" to be multilingual. That being said, it is good for people to be conversant in multiple languages. My wife is French so we speak a lot of that in our family, plus some Italian and German. My daughter learned ASL on her own, as well as Japanese due to her love of Japanese anime.
