The United States is now the country with the second most Spanish speakers, only behind Mexico, according to the report "Spanish: A Living Language 2024".

This report by David Fernández, professor at the University of Alcalá, in Spain , highlights that the United States, with just over 57.4 million Spanish speakers, has ousted Colombia, with around 52.6 million, as the second country with the most speakers.

Mexico has around 132 million, Spain more than 48, Argentina around 47, Venezuela and Peru 34 each country, Chile 20, Ecuador and Guatemala 17 each, Bolivia 12, Cuba and the Dominican Republic around 11 in each case, almost 10 Honduras, more than 7 both Paraguay and Nicaragua, more than 6 El Salvador, around 5 Costa Rica, another 4.5 Panama, just over 3 both Uruguay and Puerto Rico and around 1.6 Equatorial Guinea.

These figures include those who speak it as their native language along with those who have limited competence due to factors such as sharing it with other languages, including indigenous languages, or having learned it, such as migrants who have arrived in countries such as Spain.


I am working on joining the ranks of those that can speak it.

My daughter is about to graduate from Nova's nursing program next year, her cousin just graduated medical school and is looking to do her internship at Joe Dimaggio down here in South Florida where one of our uncle works after he graduated medical school in his 50s after deciding to go to college for the first time in his late 40s. One of his daughters is going is going to graduate from Duke's veterinarian program (she went there cause they have that large lemur habitat that she's practically lived in the last four years) the other daughter got a degree from Yale in computer science at the same time another one of our cousins was there getting a degree in psychology. That cousin's older brother is a doctor in Tallahassee along with his wife. Their dad was managing director for Jamalco (Alcoa's division down in Jamaica) and his cousin was CEO for GraceKennedy and his older brother (the father of my cousin who just graduated medical school) is a neo-natal specialist who's two other children are a pediatric surgeon and pediatrician. Then there's Republican whites. The dumb whites. The uneducated whites. The whites least likely to be college educated. It must be why you make believe so much.
