I hired a Hispanic years ago, I assumed she spoke Spanish, we had a Spanish person come into ouur business, so I asked her to help them, she said I don’t speak Spanish, I live in America why do I need to learn Spanish. That is why I now always ask if a person is bilingual or not.
 
Just what you said. No language is "harder" than any other.
I would say writing characters is much harder than writing alphabet. Thai, Arabic, Korean, and Japanese for example are difficult to learn. Despite most are not used, Kanji has 50,000 characters. Japanese writing is consist of three writing systems merged into one.
